Memorial for Gordon Holmes, 1959 - 2026

Very sorry to hear the sad news. Gordon tuned my piano for about 20 years. Always calm, reliable, punctual and professional. Many condolences for your loss.

I was saddened to read of the passing of Gordon. Such a quiet man he had tuned our piano every six months for more than twenty years. He would always chide me gently for not playing my piano enough. It was a pleasure to know him, myself and the piano will miss him.

News of Gordon’s passing has moved us considerably. He had tuned our old piano for over 10 yrs, probably rather nearer 20. Gordon’s regular visits, twice a year, marked the passing of time, and were always conducted with his quiet care and modesty. Year in, year out, as the piano was played, and our children grew up and eventually left home, Gordon’s visits remained one of life’s constants. His text messages appeared Spring and Autumn, as regular as clockwork; he would visit, do his diligent work, we would have a chat and then it would be, “See you in 6 months!”. We had only exchanged messages in early May, looking for a suitable slot… The transience of everybody’s lives is highlighted by Gordon’s sad and sudden passing. All our condolences to Michael, Rebecca, and Gordon’s family and friends.

This is shocking news as he visited us in early May and seemed very well We were so lucky to be introduced Gordon several years ago. Gentle, warm, consistent, reliable. Our thoughts are with you all.

Very sorry to hear about Gordon. He worked his magic on my old Ibach twice a year for around 17 years, including the occasional deep clean and mechanical service. Gordon was very good at his job, always professional and courteous. Sincere condolences to his family.

So sad to know that Gordon is no longer with us. Spring and Autumn, he tuned our piano for more years than I can remember and fixed its little grumbles. Gordon tuned our 1930's piano for the last 6 years or so and I looked forward to his visits, such a lovely kind man. I am very sorry to hear this news and my thoughts are with the family.

I was very shocked and saddened to hear that Gordon has died. He tuned our family piano for many years each Spring and Autumn. His visits became a marker of the seasons for me and I looked forward to a quiet chat with him each time. He was clearly very proud of his children. What a skilled, kind and dignified man he was and I will really miss him.

I was so very sad to hear the news. Gordon tuned my much loved 1930s Bluthner for nearly 30 years. Somewhere along the way he took the action away and returned it completely restored. I always had coffee ready for him, grinding it before he arrived so as not to make any noise. He was a lovely gentle man and I always enjoyed our chats. It was so nice to see the photo of him with his son and daughter. He was very proud of you both. I will miss him.

Gordon was a quiet, dedicated and skilful professional, he taught me about my piano’s unique qualities and we bantered over my perfect pitch. I will miss him and his regular visits.

I am so very sorry to hear of Gordon’s passing. He looked after our piano for more years than I can remember. His visits were like a visit from a quiet welcome friend. I enjoyed our little chats when the piano had been put back together which left us both smiling.

Gordon was such a lovely, gentle soul and a brilliant piano tuner. I send my heartfelt condolences to his family.

My sympathy to Gordon's family . I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Gordon was a true old school gentleman , professional and patient, we always enjoyed his visits. He was sympathetic to an antique Bechstein ,which other tuners had declined to take on , and kept it going beautifully. We saw him only recently. I send my sincere condolences .

I knew Gordon as my twice-a-year piano tuner for nearly two decades. For whatever reason, his dependable visits brightened my day. It must have been something about his endearing, modest manner, characterful voice and low-key humour. When we had a short small talk before or after the piano tuning he would quietly but proudly tell me about his children's achievements. I only remember spotting his kids (when they were kids) briefly in the car, possibly 2008 or 2009, as he stopped by briefly to deliver something for the piano. I can only imagine what a great father he was, and my heart goes to his family. May he rest in peace.

Gordon was a lovely person, we only saw a glimpse of him (as did many others) at regular intervals but in these moments he brought a lovely air of warmth and allegiance. One thing we will always remember was his loyalty. Even after we moved house and were further away, Gordon still made the journey to look after our piano. He never treated it as simply a job to complete; he cared that things remained right, remained beautiful, remained in tune. There is something moving in that now — that even as life changed around us, Gordon continued to arrive, tools in hand, calm in manner, and leave behind not only a better instrument, but a better atmosphere. We have recently moved to the Isle Of Wight and part of me can picture him arriving by Hovercraft ... and thinking nothing of it.

This is such sad news. We always enjoyed Gordon's visits and admired his calm, professional manner. During our conversations, his pride in his family was very evident and we extend to them our sincere sympathy. He will be much missed.
